A "Certificate of Proficiency for IGF" (CoP) refers to a qualification issued to seafarers who have completed the necessary training to safely operate on ships using fuels covered by the “International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low Flash-point Fuels” (IGF Code), essentially allowing them to work on vessels subject to IGF Code.
Key points about the IGF Certificate of Proficiency:
This “Certificate of Proficiency” demonstrates that a seafarer has the required knowledge and skills to handle the specific hazards associated with operating a ship using IGF-regulated fuels, including bunkering operations and fuel system management.
To obtain the CoP, seafarers must complete an approved training course covering the IGF Code requirements, which usually includes theoretical instruction and practical simulations.
Depending on the jurisdiction, there may be different levels of IGF proficiency certificates, such as a "Basic IGF" for general knowledge and an "Advanced IGF" for personnel with more responsibility related to fuel operations.
In addition to completing the training course, “Flag State Authorities” also mandate a period of seagoing service on an IGF-regulated vessel to fully qualify for the certificate.
